NOVA Serves: MLK Day a Success

The College sponsored its third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 16.

Instead of taking the holiday off, more than 300 NOVA students, faculty and staff “took a day on” to volunteer in the community, providing 900 hours of service in one day. Service projects included a school supply drive, raising money for building projects, and participating at a local animal shelter.

“Service is an important part of our students’ academic success and it also helps them develop their career and service pathways. Service activities such as MLK Day promote engagement with their peers and our community,” said Frances Villagran-Glover, dean of learning and technology resources.

The MLK Day of Service is part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. Over the past three years, NOVA has offered 19 service projects and engaged more than 1,100 students, faculty, and staff in service.

To date, more than 1,600 school supplies have been delivered to children around the globe. This effort is through the Operation International Children and U.S. troops.
