Participate in the process that determines who will represent you!
Students at the Loudoun Campus recently organized a debate between Democratic candidates for a congressional seat. In addition to handling the event logistics, the students secured sponsors and developed debate questions.
Dr. Rosemary Pelletier asked students in her “American National Politics” and “State and Local Politics” courses to coordinate the debate as their main project for the semester, giving the students hands-on political experience in an election year.
Pelletier finds many ways for people enrolled in her political science courses to participate in the legislative process.
“My classes have sponsored students to the Virginia General Assembly, drafted pieces of legislation and arranged several other debates,” she said.
The activities provide the students with valuable opportunities to use their skills and knowledge outside the classroom. As part of the experience, the students created a website and posted videos from the debate online.
